African American History Month Events

 

Please wear Afrocentric attire each Sunday in February in recognition of Black History Month and participate in the following events:

 

  • ​Sunday, February 8, 2026 – “LOVE” – Dr. Edward G. Boston and Minister Jessie Williams. Pastor Boston has requested shades of “red attire.” Repast to follow Morning Service.

 

  • Sunday, February 15, 2026 – HBCU. Show support of a Historically Black College or University by wearing HBCU attire. NBBC HBCU Graduates will be recognized during Morning Service.

 

  • Saturday, February 21, 2026, 1 p.m. – Broadway musical, Purlie, a powerful story written by Ossie Davis about a charismatic preacher’s return to the South to fight for freedom and dignity.  Location: Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center 2410 Wickham Ave., Newport News, VA.  Play Ticket: $21.25 (Cash only) Please submit payments to Deaconess Connie Young.  Dinner to follow (your own expense) at 5 p.m. at Saté Restaurant, 694 Town Center Dr., Newport News, VA 23606

 

  • Sunday, February 22, 2026, 3 p.m. - Celebrate the Legacy of James Weldon Johnson School by attending this event to view and honor the RESTORATION OF THE JAMES WELDON JOHNSON MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM.  Location: Yorktown Middle School Auditorium, 11201 George Washington Memorial Hwy, Yorktown, VA.  Light Refreshments
